Mark Shane & the Shane Gang play Banana Wind Bar & Grill

I had the pleasure of visiting a new-to-me venue Saturday night - Banana Wind Bar & Grill in Zephyrhills. The owner is Michael Harper, a music industry professional originally hailing from Dade City who has worked national shows flexing his skills as a sound guy. His place reflects that, with a dedicated stage, a house drum kit, house PA, & a real sound & light engineer across the room. There’s room for a good audience & lots of space for dancing, Mike offers full liquor & good food comes of the grill at a steady pace. Banana Wind’s customer base is a good cross section of people with silver haired grandmas, vest wearing motorcycle enthusiasts, boomers, gen xers, millennials & smiling working class faces filling the place & enthusiastic for the live music Mike’s brought to town.

Bands are booked on Friday and Saturday night. His bookings reflect his desire to showcase the solid acts out on our local scene. Go, Mike. I like your place. I’ll be back!

What does it mean to be a promoter? According to music.careers.com, Promoters do just what their name suggests -they promote live shows. But more than just promoting the show, promoters also organize shows and book the bands. The basic duties of a promoter are to secure a venue for a show, promote the show via the media, work with the bands, sponsors, vendors and others to make sure all the show needs are covered (PA system, lighting, safety, vendors, etc.) and ensure that it is a good, well organized event. Some promoters put on shows for the love of it and actually end up spending more than they make. Winding River Promotions' business model focuses on putting together musical events which are a win-win for everyone involved. If attendees, musicians, venue owners, vendors and sponsors all walk away saying "wow, what a great time!", then we've done our job.
